The peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro are three in number. Kibo (5,895m), the highest peak in the center, is a dormant volcano. Mawenzi (5,280 m) to the east and the lesser Shira (4,269 m) to the west border it. Both, though, are extinct; in contrast, Kibo last erupted between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago, and it may do so again at any time.

At 3,500 meters, you can begin the Shira Plateau hike and experience the sights, sounds, and colors of the area.
