Arusha National Park: A compact park with a wealth of activities
Arusha National Park, northeast of Arusha town and only 50 kilometers from the international Kilimanjaro Airport, is a stunning, almost magical location. Mt Meru silently watches the activities below as graceful giraffes stroll over the open grassland, exquisite black-and-white Colobus monkeys leap effortlessly through the treetops, and stunning flamingos tower tall in the shallow Momella Lakes.
Arusha National Park is tiny in comparison to Tarangire or Serengeti National Parks. Still, this relatively little space is larger than 77,000 football (soccer) fields! Surprisingly, the vegetation on this region supports an equally impressive diversity of fauna. In the West, from Mt. Meru, Africa’s fifth-highest peak, the Momella
Activities in the National Park of Arusha
Traditional 4×4 safari vehicle wildlife drives are the most popular activity in this area. Your knowledgeable local guide will carefully negotiate the terrain and is aware of the best spots to see wildlife. It’s an excellent site to start your longer safari or go for a day excursion.
There’s more, though: Arusha National Park offers walking safaris for anyone looking to get outside. There aren’t many areas in Tanzania’s well-protected national parks where you can go on foot through the bush. However, it is made feasible by the small number of predators in Arusha National Park.
A walking safari is an excellent chance for anyone who wants to see wildlife and birds up close, examine the trees covered in moss up close, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and colors surrounding them. During a walking safari, buffaloes, warthogs, giraffes, and a variety of birds, including the silvery cheeked hornbill, small bee-eater, and occasionally a long crested eagle, are the most frequently sighted animals. The stroll returns hikers to the Momella gate after stopping at the cool Tululusia waterfalls.
The Lakes of Momella
The northeastern Momella Lakes are shallow, alkaline bodies of water with varying salinities. A perfect place for flamingos to live! Here you can see big groups of these graceful birds, depending on the season and water levels. You can also go canoeing on the little Momella Lake. These leisurely and picturesque excursions, which last between two and three hours, lead you past herds of buffalo and antelope grazing by the sea. There will be an experience guide with you.
With its diverse landscapes and exquisite combination of flora and fauna, Arusha National Park is a true gem.
