Olkarien Gorge and its scenery  is every travellers’ dream , with prehistoric characteristics surrounding the area, its engulfed with long standing mountains, canyons and spectacular formation of rocks dominating the wide valleys along Ngorongoro area. Geologically it is an amazing site with the great canyon slicing through the earth and for geologists, it always mesmerizes them with the uniqueness of the place

Olkarien Gorge is one eye catching land formation in the furthest east side of the Gol Mountains in the Ngorongoro highlands. The main point of attraction of the gorge is the huge colonies of ‘the Ruppell’s Griffon Vultures’ one of the highest flying birds. These social birds of the Serengeti, makes large nests from sticks and the long grass from the endless plains  and breeding of their chicks has dated thousands of years.
Warm late mornings when the currents and temperature’s start to gain, The Ruppel’s Griffon Vultures are usually seen  leaving the gorge and their homes but continue to soar around the gorge and nearby areas. The Ruppel’s Vultures flies to the Westers part of serengeti for up to 140 km searching for the rotting kills and herds in Serengeti, the bird stays in the air for long sometimes, more than seven hours patrolling for animal carcasses.

The gorge is an efficient habitat for safe nesting and a creating a home for almost a hundred bird species. During the day the gorge becomes a passage of young Maasai warriors who herd their animals to drink water at the wells dug below. Visitors to this m gorge experience a biblical example of the ‘Garden of Eden’ a natural interaction phenomenon between man and wildlife in an undisturbed natural setting.
